Does manipulating the filter slider affect the volume in any way (volume of static noise) or does it just affect the pitch and volume of the incoming message?
I think the filter slider mostly changes the pitch and clarity of the message, not the static noise volume, but it might affect how the noise feels.
A narrower filter should reduce the amount of static, as well as affect what signals are received.
(In the real world, it's more complicated than just reducing the volume of the static, but that's a reasonable approximation to make for your apps.)
