This guy uses a canvas to make a 3d grid "game of life" simulator. If you follow along with the playlist he'll take you step by step using canvas and a couple of for loops, and what needs to be done to get the tiles to change colors. It's not exactly like what we're doing, but it's close enough to use as a jumping off block.
I dont think using youtube is a great Idea Try google instead
