How different is the use of data in policing today given that police have always used data before?

I think that the difference now is the way data is being processed and interpreted. In the Big Data Surveillance article, traditional surveillance has moved from a query based information system and disparate data to an alert based information system and integrated data. The queries that were once being used couldn't hold nearly as much data points as these alert based systems. Additionally, these data points can now be processed to help predict future criminal activity. Instead of data just being collected, predictive policing softwares now target areas based on computer generated algorithms. The data is being integrated from other non-crime related sources and merged into these algorithms to form a relational system.
