Error Loading Project: Cannot load module

+12 votes
Does anyone know what this error message means or how to fix it? After pushing/committing my last changes to github earlier today I get this error when I try to open my project in Android Studios and it fails to open.

I took a screenshot of what the "details" section of the message looks like as well.

What does your github directory look like?

Do you get the error after importing the whole project from VCS or trying to open a local existing copy?

After seeing this I am almost wondering if a new copy from github got pulled down into an existing project and now there are two of the same modules?

EDIT: After looking at your last push 5 hours ago, your merge messed up because it was pushing .idea folder and adding multiple modules

Normally the .idea folder is not pushed to get, so to avoid pulling down a bad copy in the future you can remove the .idea folder from github and make sure this is in your .gitignore

I'm not sure what exactly I did but it started working again a bit ago, I think it probably had something to do with what you're suggesting though thanks.

I feel like this sort of thing (though not exaclyt the same) has happened when the Android project name doesn't match the GitHub repository name, and so then when you do another "checkout" for it, the project name changes... and Android Studio gets a bit confused... maybe?
